SAINT MATTHEW
THE NEW-CONFESSOR
Our Father among the saints, St. Matthew the New-Confessor, is truly one of the most important figures of the 20th century, for Orthodoxy in Greece. A spiritual son of St. Nectarius of Aegina, the Wonder-worker, a genuine child the Orthodox Church, who was a champion of piety, zeal, and asceticism, who's faith, allowed the All-Holy Spirit to work wonders before and after his repose in the Lord.
Saint Matthew made a mark everywhere he went, and was known for his great piety and his zeal, but also for his self discipline. He was known especially to the Fathers of the Simonos-Petra Monastery as the 'Good Spiritual Father', but also in Jerusalem, where there too, his name is mentioned even to this day, just as it is at Simonos-Petra. Unlike the false information and slander which exist about St. Matthew, which portray St. Matthew as being a fanatic "simpleton," who was uneducated, and lacked discernment, nothing of course could be further than the truth, in fact he was a successful graduate of the Holy Cross Theological Seminary of Jerusalem. Ironically, amongst his peers was the very person, who in 1924, would be responsible for the schism which would take place in the Orthodox world, because due to introducing and adopting the Gregorian Calendar in the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
St. Matthew, was a Hagiographer, but, he was also the person who compliled the set of Great Synaxarion which most Orthodox Christians and parishes use today, for reading the lives of the saints. He compiled the writings and works of St. Symeon the "Interpretor" as well as others, into 14 Volumes, a volume for each month, Triodion and Pentecostarion.
